FYE Information Literacy Online Tutorials

Online Information Literacy video tutorials produced by ProQuest and CCSU and combined with ACRL Framework for faculty use with FYE classes.

The Evolution and Application of Information Literacy

Information Literacy was introduced by the American Library Association (ALA) in the late 1990's and evolved into a set of standards developed by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of ALA, in 2000. The term was originally defined by the ACRL as "a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (ACRL, Information Literacy Defined). This definition was accompanied by a full set of learning objectives, outcomes and assessment instruments.

As recently as February of 2015, the ACRL has developed the Information Literacy Standards into a much broader framework of threshold concepts as a result of greater responsibilities on behalf of students, faculty members and librarians toward finding, evaluating, using information for creating new knowledge in the rapidly evolving information environment (Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, Introduction). Currently there are six frames, each representing an information literacy threshold concept that include knowledge practices and disposition descriptions. These frames are interchangeable with the competencies and concepts learned and applied throughout the process of researching any academic topic.

On each page of this subject guide, you will find a link to the ACRL's The Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, as well as throughout the ProQuest Research Companions - the online set of information literacy tutorial modules framing this set of tutorials. Please peruse the center box on this page to learn more about the ProQuest Research Companions, as well the other sections of this page to learn more about the videos created by the Elihu Burritt Library instructional faculty members.

With best wishes for a successful semester,
