Citing the sources you use when writing any paper is important for the following reasons:

• Provides proper credit to the scholars whose works you used within your paper.
• Helps you avoid plagiarism by properly attributing quotes and ideas to the source from which they came.
• Shows readers what kind of research you have done in writing your own paper.
• Provides readers all the information they will need to track down the sources you used should they want to do some further reading or use those sources to support their own research.

Failing to properly cite your sources is called plagiarism. Not only does engaging in plagiarism tarnish your academic and personal integrity, it is also considered an act of academic misconduct, which can result in serious disciplinary actions, sometimes expulsion. 

The APA Citation Style was created and is maintained by the American Psychological Association. This is the citation style most often used by researchers and writers of the behavioral sciences and the social sciences.

Library resources, like CentralSearch and many of our databases, often come with built-in citation generator functions. The exact location and steps to use this tool will vary based on the resource you are using; however, look for the 'Cite' button. 

If you have found information from a credible Internet site, a citation generator tool such as KnightCite or EasyBib will help you create the citation on your own.

Also, be aware that you must double-check any generated citations for accuracy. To better keep track of your references and more easily generate citations and entire bibliographies, try using a citation manager tool such as Mendeley or Zotero.
