CCSU Students may be interested in if, when, where, and how they can use AI tools. To avoid violating the Student Code of Conduct's Academic Integrity policy, students must adhere to the AI policy provided by their professor, avoid plagiarizing, and cite their sources, AI or otherwise (see our guide to citing AI sources). AI can be embedded into tools such as Grammarly, so the use of these tools (beyond simple grammar and spell checking) may not be allowed within a course or a specific assignment. If you have questions, talk with your professor.
If your professor says that you cannot use AI and you're tempted to use it anyway, this action will violate academic integrity policies, threatening your standing here at CCSU. More importantly, you will short-change your own learning. Using AI tools can be the intellectual equivalent of training for a marathon by having someone else do practice runs on your behalf. Will it save you time? Yes, but on the day of the marathon, you will be woefully unprepared! Professors create assignments to help you build your ability to learn, as well as to gain knowledge and to build specific skill sets. Developing mental "muscles" will be key to your success here at Central and throughout your life. If you need support, there are student support centers on campus, such as the Writing Center and the Learning Center, so please take advantage of these services. At the library, we can help you conduct research. We will do so by consulting with and helping you find the best possible resources to meet your information needs.
Part of the library's recorded Fall 2023 "Research on the Run" workshops, Digital Resources Librarian Sharon Clapp offered some hints on using AI in ways that are Responsible, Ethical, Accountable, and Learning-oriented (R.E.A.L.)

Scite is a powerful tool that uses AI technology to evaluate citations and the credibility of scholarly resources in every field of study. The information found on Scite is continuously updated to provide accurate results and citation context for researchers. Scite can help students and researchers make informed decisions about the sources they use and organize their research using their AI assistant, the reference checker, and the personalized dashboard tool.
