Who is eligible to use interlibrary loan services?

All currently registered students, faculty, and staff members are eligible to use interlibrary loan services.

What items cannot be borrowed through interlibrary loan?

The following is a list of items that cannot be borrowed through interlibrary loan:

  • Books owned by the Elihu Burritt Library or currently available for loan through the CCSU catalog
  • Textbooks (books needed for an entire semester)
  • Entire issue of journals or periodicals
  • Some theses and dissertations
  • Some audio-visual materials (videos, CDs, DVDs)
  • Books recently published (within the past several months)
  • Rare books and other fragile, old materials

If you need helping checking to see if an item you want is owned by the Elihu Burritt Library or if the item can be borrowed from one of the other state universities or community colleges, please contact a librarian at 860-832-3410.

Do I have to pay to use interlibrary loan services?

There is no cost to use interlibrary loan services, which are provided to you free of charge. Charges will apply if items are lost or damaged.

What if I am late returning an interlibrary loan book?

While there are no daily late fees applied, charges for lost or damaged materials will incur.

How long does it take to get my requested item?

The delivery time for an interlibrary loan item depends on what the item is and where it is coming from. Requests for articles are generally filled within a day or less, but books and media can take up to 7-10 days. In rare cases, we need to get items from overseas, and those items can take much longer to arrive.

How will I know when my item has arrived?

When your requested item has arrived, you will be notified via email that your item is ready for pick-up.

Where do I pick up my item?

Items are available to be picked up at the Circulation Desk located on the first floor of the library. Articles will be emailed to you electronically in PDF format.

Where do I return items?

Items can be returned to the Circulation Desk located on the first floor of the library. They may also be placed in the book drop located on the North side of the building (facing the parking lot).

Is there a limit to the number of requests I can make?

There is no limit to the number of requests one can make. However, staff may only be able to process a few requests a day in order to give equal time to other patrons' requests.

How long can I keep a book?

Each book or other media that we borrow from another library has a due date set by that library. On average, items can be kept for several weeks.

How do I ask for a renewal?

You can ask for a renewal on an item through your library account. Once you log in, choose the item that you want to renew and click on Request Renewal. This request is sent to the lending library. They will answer back with a yes or no and ILL staff will notify you via email of their decision. If the item is already overdue, please contact the ILL staff at 860-832-3408 or swhite@ccsu.edu, and they will make the renewal request for you.
