Virtual Library Services During Emergency Campus Closure

Due to the current COVID19 / Coronavirus-related emergency campus shutdown, the library has put together this special guide to virtual library services.

FInding OER to Supplement Course Materials

In the event that students do not have access to their course reserves during the campus shutdown, you can find  ways to supplement the material using Open Educational Resources (OER). It is possible to find OER in your discipline, which students can then access online. While the OER you find may not be exactly like the original textbooks or materials you used for your course, they will still provide important resources for student learning in these extraordinary circumstances.

To learn about and find OER, please visit: http://libguides.ccsu.edu/OER

For help finding materials related to your subject, or with any other OER-related questions, contact the OER Library Team:

Joy Hansen - jhansen@ccsu.edu

Jillian Maynard - j.maynard@ccsu.edu

The following two messages from Lumen Learning and TopHat are helpful for those considering OER. Lumen Learning and TopHat are two OER vendors. They use OER to create courses or content packages for faculty and charge a small fee to use their platform. So while they are considered OER, the user is paying for the platform. The messages below were sent out to the OER Community and educators in general, stating that for the time being during this pandemic, they will wave those associated fees to use the platform.

Message from Lumen Learning

Lumen Learning just announced that it will waive any fees related to their platforms for the rest of the semester in an effort to assist with academic continuity during the COVID-19 outbreak.

As a reminder, Lumen’s content is OER and courseware within their Candela platform is free of charge. Their adaptive platform, Waymaker, and their online homework platform, OHM, generally have a $25 support fee associated.

Any faculty looking to transition their course to a remote format could take advantage of these titles if they align with their objectives.

Again, if you need any assistance or have questions, contact the OER Library Team (information above).

Message from TopHat

Amid growing concerns about the potential spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), college campuses are closing and faculty are being asked to completely rethink how they teach.

I believe it is our responsibility to help. That’s why we are making Top Hat’s platform free of charge for the rest of the semester to support educators transitioning to remote teaching and learning.

Top Hat is ready to help you transition to remote teaching with dedicated training, support agents, and all the resources you need to quickly set up an online classroom.

Here are common scenarios in which Top Hat can help you minimize disruptions to teaching and learning:

  • You need to continue hosting a live classroom lecture
  • You have canceled classes and prefer to deliver course content online
  • You need to replace in-person tests and exams

To get started, sign up for this offer. An education specialist will be in touch within 1-3 business days to help you get set up.
